What Is the Function of a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are a usual routine procedure which can repair many concerns. These crowns are like covers which can be customized for the teeth that feel and look like natural teeth. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” which is placed over a tooth to cover the tooth to restore its strength, size and shape and correct its appearance. The crowns are cemented into place after which they completely encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line. Let us throw some light on functions of a Dental Crown.

Aesthetics

Dental crowns are usually made from a composite material or porcelain that appears like a natural tooth. If one gets any cracks or breaks in their teeth, a crown can easily repair these cosmetic problems. They are basically used on the top of a dental implant to replace a completely missing tooth.

Protective

Crowns are used to cover teeth that have suffered extreme decay. The procedure involves removing the decay and cleaning the tooth and then placing the dental crown over the top. This usually protects the tooth from further decay in the future. This treatment is also used for holding broken or cracked teeth that protect the tooth from causing severe damage.

Restoration and Replacement

Dental Crown are mainly used to repair and restore the tooth which has broken or worn down and bring that tooth back to normal. The crown is fixed over the entire tooth, all the way to the gum. Once the crown gets fixed completely in its area, the damaged tooth gets back in action so one can chew with easily without any problems. Crowns are also helpful to replace the missing tooth when it is used in combination with bridges or dental implants. In a bridge, the crown is fixed to the neighbouring teeth that replaces the tooth, with other crowns. Whereas, during a dental implant treatment, the crown is bonded with a titanium screw that is placed in the dental bone while performing a surgery.
